I find the basic library functions very easy to use, reading and writing to Excel is a breeze which is currently about the extent of what I need to do but the library is very developed and I just haven't had the time to delve deeper. I gave some real effort to learning VBA when I first started my first 'real' job about 10 months ago because everyone loves Excel but it is so clunky and the IDE didn't do it for me.Īfter quite a bit of searching I found a good library in Python for Excel. I learned on C++ and have written some javascript and PHP but I am currently a Python junkie.
It is also a fairly developed language where VBA is a crippled mess. The reason for this recommendation is that you can do some much more with Python than VBA. Code runs on a robust Linux instance where you can serve your project as a web app, view it as a desktop GUI, or even build desktop programs with sound. It has a free library that plugs right into Excel. The Coding Rooms IDE is a powerful, easy to use, browser-based development environment. If you have programmed before and understand the basic concepts of if/else, for loops, while loops, and functions I would recommend picking up Python. Going against the grain here and it is only a suggestion.
